A Farm Announces Robbery of €90,000 Worth of Escargot

Empty Storage at Snail Farm Following Significant Robbery

Burglars made off with escargot valued at ninety thousand euros from a farm in northern France that provides for gourmet restaurants.

L'Escargot Des Grands Crus in Bouzy, near Reims, stated that its complete inventory of fresh and frozen snails was taken—a “major setback” just ahead of the holiday season.

The intruders broke into the property during the night leading to Monday, cutting a perimeter fence before accessing farm buildings.

Police received a complaint later in the week, and officers are currently pursuing leads.

Meanwhile, the farm is striving to replenish its supplies to satisfy end-of-year orders from clients.

Snails: A French Delicacy

Escargot are regarded as a French delicacy, typically cooked in butter with garlic or white wine before being extracted from their shell.

Producers in France typically experience a increase in demand during December, as people indulge with the specialty for Christmas and New Year’s celebrations.

“This is certainly not the type of post we thought we’d share as the holidays approach,” the farm wrote in a message regarding the incident.

They went on to describe the robbery as “surprising, bewildering, and a serious setback to the whole staff,” noting, “We are trying our best to replenish our inventory to satisfy our clients for the holidays.”

Impact of the Robbery

Photos taken following the burglary reveal racks and freezers nearly cleared out of snail products.

“An entire section of finished products was taken from the store, and raw material inventory from my production area,” Jean-Mathieu Dauvergne commented.

“This represented my end-of-year stock… We had precisely enough to manage the festive season without any concerns.”

The farm has in the past provided establishments such as award-winning venues in Reims, as well as delicatessens and private clients.

At present, the farm is focused on recovering and making sure that end-of-year orders can still be fulfilled despite the significant loss.
