A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing these treatments must be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally see a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Doctors propose the way of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
People who have come off the jabs describe a intense resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if something that goes on and you become ravenous," said one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
