RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several entry passages down to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their skill and their valour," Healey added. "They were part of a great many British personnel stationed over the holidays. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our safety, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military carried out what it termed a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in the country, following an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
