Marnus Labuschagne Left Out from Australia's One-Day International Squad Against Team India

Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from the three-game ODI series against India, as in-form Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw receiving a shock inclusion.

Performance Issues Lead to Exclusion

The right-hander was left out from the ODI team following scoring just one run in his two batting efforts during the top-end series against South Africa in August. Labuschagne has a highest score of 47 in his most recent ten ODI batting appearances.

The 31-year-old has featured in 68 ODIs and accumulated 1,871 ODI runs at an average of 34.64, but will now work towards a Test team comeback in time for the Ashes beginning in Perth on 21 November.

Renshaw's Return and Other Squad Changes

There have been indications of a improvement in form with a score of 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw scored a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.

Renshaw could to make his white-ball international debut in the forthcoming series against India after previously being selected in an ODI squad in 2022.

The left-hander has played 14 Test matches with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also seeking a red-ball recall as Australia seek a solution to their opening batting issues.

Pace Returns and Fitness Updates

Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc returns for the ODI series against India after being rested since performing well for Australia in the 3-0 Test series sweep of West Indies in July.

Big Bash star Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after sustaining a head injury in the lead up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.

ODI captain Pat Cummins is still unavailable as he hopes to heal from a spinal issue in time to captain Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.

Squad Selection Approach and Schedule

Australia have selected a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes approaching, although Glenn Maxwell will be absent for the five-game T20 series due to a wrist problem sustained in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will captain both the ODI and T20 sides after hitting a ton in the final game against New Zealand to clinch a 2-0 series win last week.

“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be some management through the later stages of the series as players get ready for the summer through Sheffield Shield cricket,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an important period in the build towards the T20 World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously prepare specific players for the Test series ahead.”

Australia’s three-match ODI series against India starts on 19 October in Perth, before the opponents play five T20s from 29 October.
