National Enforcement Begin Border Operation in the City of Charlotte
Immigration officers have descended on the Democratic-run city as part of the federal government's expanding campaign on illegal immigration, according to authority reports.
The campaign, called "Charlotte's Web Operation", was announced on recently, with officials stating that "criminal illegal aliens" would be targeted in the metropolitan region.
"Our department is deploying Homeland Security personnel to the city to maintain public safety and remove dangerous individuals," a spokesperson commented.
Municipal leaders, including Mayor of Charlotte Li Vyles, published a unified declaration criticising the operation, saying it was causing "needless concern and instability" in the community.
Operation Details
Armoured vehicles and elite units could be participating in the North Charlotte operation, according to confidential reports.
Multiple congregants performing maintenance at a eastern Charlotte church fled into woods when agents arrived, with a person being taken into custody, according to reports.
"We believed the church was secure and we would be undisturbed," a teenage observer told reporters.
Background Situation
Since the presidential term renewal, government agencies have been dispatched to several locations including Washington DC, Los Angeles and Chicago to implement the pledge of "the largest deportation programme" in US history.
The DHS said they are implementing the campaign because local authorities has not honoured the approximately 1,400 ICE individuals in custody, meaning they had been freed due to "sanctuary policies".
City Status
Charlotte is not a sanctuary city - municipalities that have measures in place to reduce support given to government enforcement - but it is a "officially recognized inclusive community". This is a formal designation for urban centers that are committed to immigrant integration.
"President Trump and Secretary [Kristi] Noem will act to safeguard Americans when local officials decline," authorities declared.
Community Profile
Charlotte is an demographically mixed community, with about nearly one-fifth of residents being immigrants, according to population statistics.
Federal authorities has not said how long the operations will persist. Windy City enforcement, which began in September is persisting.
Leadership Commentary
Earlier in the week, US Representative and Democrat, Alma Adams said she was informed of the initiative and was "deeply worried" about federal officers coming to this region.
The following urban area on the administration's agenda is set to be the Louisiana city, according to reports, and that as many as numerous personnel could be dispatched to the location.
Enforcement actions in other municipalities like large metropolitan areas have come under fire over allegations of overly aggressive tactics.
