The Banking Giant Mandates Fingerprint or Eye Scans for Headquarters Entry
JP Morgan Chase has informed staff members moving into its state-of-the-art corporate base in New York that they must submit their physical characteristics to enter the high-value structure.
Change from Optional to Required
The financial firm had previously envisioned for the collection of physical identifiers at its recently opened tower to be optional.
However, employees of the leading financial institution who have started operations at the main office since August have obtained electronic messages stating that biometric access was now "compulsory".
The Technology Behind Entry
The new entry system demands staff to submit their eye patterns to gain access entry points in the lobby in place of swiping their access passes.
Headquarters Details
The main office building, which apparently was built for $3bn to develop, will in time function as a workplace for ten thousand workers once it is fully occupied before year-end.
Safety Justification
The banking institution opted not to respond but it is believed that the implementation of physical identifiers for access is created to make the premises better protected.
Special Cases
There are special provisions for certain staff members who will still be able to use a badge for entry, although the standards for who will utilize more conventional entry methods remains undefined.
Supporting Mobile Applications
Complementing the deployment of biometric readers, the organization has also introduced the "JPMC Work" smartphone application, which functions as a electronic pass and center for worker amenities.
The application permits users to coordinate guest registration, explore building layouts of the building and pre-order meals from the building's 19 on-site dining vendors.
Security Context
The deployment of enhanced security measures comes as American companies, particularly those with substantial activities in the city, look to enhance safety following the attack of the top executive of one of the biggest American insurance companies in recent months.
The executive, the leader of the insurance giant, was fatally shot not far from the financial district.
Potential Wider Implementation
It is uncertain if JP Morgan intends to deploy biometric access for personnel at its locations in other key banking hubs, such as the UK capital.
Corporate Surveillance Context
The move comes amid controversy over the implementation of technology to track workers by their organizations, including observing workplace presence.
Previously, all JP Morgan workers on flexible arrangements were told they have to report to the physical location on a daily basis.
Leadership Viewpoint
The bank's chief executive, the prominent banker, has described the bank's state-of-the-art skyscraper as a "impressive representation" of the company.
The executive, one of the influential banking figures, this week warned that the chance of the American markets experiencing a decline was significantly higher than many financiers anticipated.
