The Tooth Fairy Story Film Analysis: Cartoon Journey with a Sprinkling of Kid-Appropriate Tween Love Story

In this animated adventure aimed at tweens, the world of fairies is dedicated to gathering teeth from slumbering youngsters and placing gold under their pillows. Board-riding teenage rebel fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about spending his future to gathering baby teeth—a feeling that’s completely understandable. He is just slightly more interested in the financial workings of the situation: the fairies deliver the teeth to unseen goblins, who supply gold as payment. However, Van’s interest grows when he spots a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be not at all the hideous gnome he had imagined.

A Forbidden Connection and Shared Threat

Everything is prepared for an adventure with a gentle touch of young love (though it’s very much suitable for children). The goblin and fairy communities are separated from each other, and there’s nothing like the excitement of secrecy to unite beings together. Both groups as seen here are remarkably alike, yet both maintain biased views about the other. The fairies are supposed to be entitled types, prone to stealing anything they want, while the goblins are allegedly stupid, smelly, and primitive, but are in fact intelligent and advanced in technology.

Of course, this scenario needs a shared foe to unite against, and that need is met by some nasty spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush about their intentions: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they make for quite savage, though not particularly skilled, villains.

Ideal Viewers and Final Thoughts

There aren’t all that many children’s animations aimed at the kind of audience that is starting to experience first crushes, but aren’t yet old enough for whatever 14-year-olds are watching in lieu of Twilight. Should your youngster falls into this age group, this is unlikely to become their new favorite movie, but you could do worse.

A Tooth Fairy Tale arrives in Scottish cinemas starting October 10 and the rest of the UK from 24 October.
